Data Recovery: What You Need To Know & How to do it Yourself

Janie Bell

Data loss is a common occurrence in today’s digital age. Every day, millions of records are lost through human error, virus attacks, natural disasters and more.  Recovering lost data is never an easy task and it becomes even more difficult when it involves a large quantity of data.

However, there are multiple data recovery services that can help you get back your data. There are many myths surrounding data recovery services and they can be hard to understand. This article tackles common questions surrounding data recovery and how to do it yourself.

What do you need to backup your data?

There are many different methods you can use to back up your data. Some people rely on external hard drives, while others create a backup routine that includes regular backups of individual files, as well as replicating data across the network.

This article recommends using a backup service to back up your data. The reason for this is because it is more reliable than doing it yourself. There are many options out there for a backup service and you should be able to choose one that fits your needs and budget. When choosing a service, you want to make sure that it offers unlimited storage so you don’t have to worry about running out of space later on.

What happens when your data is lost?

Data loss happens when your hard drive crashes, you lose your laptop or computer, or even if you delete a file and accidentally put it in the recycle bin. You may be able to recover some files yourself using data recovery software. However, if your device has been damaged by physical damage or virus attack, then chances are that a data recovery service is the only option for you.

Why does data loss happen?

Data loss occurs for many reasons. The most common reasons are:

  1. Damaged discs
  2. Virus attacks
  3. User error
  4. Natural disasters
  5. Human error
  6. Computer malfunctions

There is no way to completely prevent data loss in today’s digital age. But there are methods of mitigating data loss, like using a backup and using encryption. You can also use some services that specialize in data recovery, but the best way to avoid data loss is by backing up your files and encrypting them.

How to do a Data Recovery

As a first step, you should try to use recovery software. Sometimes, data recovery companies charge too much and don’t even work. The best place to start is with one of these free recovery tools. Once you have tried using one of these tools, it might be time to take the next step.

You can either contact your data recovery company or try doing this yourself.  If you are trying to do this yourself, there are three parts that you will need for the data recovery process: a hard drive, an operating system and the file that needs recovery. With the hard drive and OS in hand, simply follow the directions for your specific model on how to do it on your own.

Recover Deleted Files from a MAC or PC

The first step toward data recovery is to back up your data so that you can recover it if necessary. One of the most common methods of recovering deleted files is using a USB drive or an external hard drive. If you have a MAC, you can use Time Machine software to back up your computer’s files and create an image file of your current drive.

On Windows, there are many free software programs that help backup your drives and make them portable, like Acronis True Image. Once you have made sure that you have backed-up all necessary data, you should create a second partition on the drive that will only contain the recovery files. You could also use any other external hard drive or USB stick in order to recover lost data.

To find the recovery disk’s partition on your Mac, open Disk Utility and select “Restore from Backup” from the top left tab. To locate the recovery disk on Windows XP or Vista, go to My Computer -> Control Panel -> System Restore -> Create a restore point -> Next > Restore Point 1 (or whatever number) > Next > Select File System: Apple HFS+ or MS-DOS FAT32 (if using an external hard drive). When prompted for a password for this partition, just leave it blank.

Recover Deleted Files from an Android

One of the most important steps of data recovery is recovering deleted files from your Android device. Data can be transferred to the SD card and deleted from the device.

The first step is to download a program called File Recovery Pro onto your Android phone. This program will scan for any files that have been removed from the device since you last backed them up or transferred them to a new location.

The next step involves using File Recovery Pro to recover any missing or deleted files on your device. You should select “Recover Deleted Files” after the program has scanned for all of the files that are missing on your Android device.

Recover Vee and Air Data from a Vee or Air

A Vee or Air is an acronym for a video editing application that has the power to render high-quality video footage. If you have a Vee or Air file, you can use data recovery software to recover the footage.

The process of recovering the footage is easy, but it does take some time depending on the size and quality of the file you are trying to extract. There are multiple tools that can be used to assist in data recovery including computer software and hardware devices.

Final Words

The concept of data recovery is simple, but the process of actually doing it is a bit complicated. There are a lot of different variables involved in the process that can make or break the success of the project. The most important thing to remember when attempting to recover lost data is that you need to be patient and not give up too early. If you do not try hard enough at first, you may end up losing your files forever.
